Madeskov Hundeskov

All of Madeskov has been set aside as a dog park. The wood covers about 19 hectares, equivalent to about 26 football pitches, and lies about 5 km north-east of Sønderborg, between Augustenborg Fjord to the north and the motorway towards Fynshav to the south. The wood is run by Naturstyrelsen (the Danish Nature Agency). What makes Madeskov special is the fjord. The wood runs right down to the water, where your dog can get in and have a swim, so it is an obvious choice for dogs that love a dip. Up by the water there is a rest area with benches where you can take a break with a view over the fjord. It is a good idea to bring a towel for your dog before it gets back in the car. Inside the wood there are wide forest paths and lots of scrub where your dog can sniff and explore. The dog park is not fenced, so your dog may only be off-lead when it is supervised and under your control. In summer the wood is also used by guests from Sønderborg Strand Camping right next door. There is free parking at both entrances to the wood, and the bus stops at the Madeskov stop. No water point or rubbish bin has been recorded, so bring water for your dog and take the bags home. The paths are not suitable for wheelchairs. If you want to try another large wood in the area, Sønderskoven Hundeskov, at about 21 ha, is around 3 km away. If you need a fenced dog park, Kær Vestermark, at about 1.8 ha, is around 4 km away.
